Music Games and Their Anemic Libraries

Here's the problem with Singstar (and Rock Band, for that matter): Their music libraries are too small. Music games need variety or they die on the vine.

Where is our iTunes-sized library for Singstar? Rock Band? Open the flood gates already.

This is exactly what prevents me from purchasing something like SingStar...I'm pretty particular about my music, and at best there's usually a small handful of songs I can stand to play/sing/mime repeatedly in any of these packages. That doesn't carry me for more than a few weeks. The software gets consigned to party-only duty, and a few months later its revealed to be no more than a pricey lark.

You're right on the mark. I haven't played Rock Band with any regularity lately, probably since the beginning of Summer. I pop SingStar in every Friday to check for new tracks but outside of that, we don't play it much around here. It's a shame because both games are solid.

I hope Rock Band 2 offers some interesting modes. In hindsight, the original game was rather dry and left me wanting for some interesting features, perhaps some social-networking tools ala SingStar... something to put more humanity into the experience. So often, Rock Band seems to amount to clicky plastic buttons and staring at rectangles as they scroll down the screen.
